Fixed networks generate 14.8 billion minutes of traffic in 2002

In 2002, users of fixed telephone service generated 14.8 billion minutes of telephone traffic, including voice and Internet access, indicate data from the Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM). This figure is 6.4% less than the 15.8 billion minutes of originated calls in the previous year.

The historic operator accounted for 89.3% of all this traffic in 2002, versus 92.2% in 2001. Discriminated, PT Comunicações routed 89.8% of all national traffic, versus 92.8% in 2001, and 74.4% of all outgoing international traffic, versus 74.6% in the previous year.

The percentages reveal a 29.1% rise in total traffic routed by the new providers of fixed service, counted in minutes, between the end of 2001 and the end of 2002.

The number of primary telephone accesses totalled 4.36 million at the end of 2002, 0.5% less than the value at the end of 2001.

The service's penetration rate was 42.2 accesses per 100 inhabitants at the end of 2002, versus 42.4 at the end of the previous year.

PT Comunicações accounted for 95.0% of total accesses registered at the end of 2002, versus 98.2% in 2001.

In 2002, the total telephone accesses assured by the new operators increased by 173.3% over the previous year.

The total for fixed network numbers that have been ported, i.e., transferred between operators, was more than 63,000 at the end of the fourth quarter of 2002. This figure corresponds to an increase of 62.3% over the previous quarter.

There were 27 licensed providers of fixed telephone service on 31 December 2002, of which 16 were operational. Seven of these provided direct and indirect access service, 4 provided only direct access service and 5 provided only indirect access service.
