ECC PT1 - Vilnius

The 22nd meeting of project team 1 of the Electronic Communications Committee (ECC PT1) was held last 12-14 September in Vilnius, attended by representatives of the administrations, operators and manufacturers and observers from the European Commission, UMTS Forum and other organisations. PT1 is in charge of all issues concerning the future evolution of IMT-2000 and systems beyond, and co-ordinates European contributions and the respective positions on spectrum, regulatory and sharing/compatibility issues under WP8 of the International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunications Sector (ITU-R). A major duty of this group is to prepare the CEPT positions on items 1.4 and 1.9 of the 2007 World Radiocommunications Conference (WRC-07).

A highlight of this meeting was the preparation of European positions on WRC-07 item 1.4 ? analysis of spectrum issues related to the future development of IMT-2000 and systems beyond. After a certain amount of debate, agreement was reached on revision of the existing brief on the subject. It is noteworthy that for the time being there is no firm CEPT position on the eventual bands in which IMT might operate.

ECC PT1 also completed the report on the compatibility of UMTS 900/1800 with systems operating in adjacent bands (such as DECT, GSM-R and emitting microphones), with same forwarded to the Spectrum Engineering working group (WG SE) to be approved for public consultation.

Finally, note that the work concerning revision of the CEPT ERC/Rec. 01-01, on cross-border co-ordination for UMTS, was finalised at this meeting. This revision was basically meant to extend the possibility of border co-ordination of UMTS systems in the standard band in 2.1 GHz to the extension bands in 2.5 GHz.
