Executive Summary

International parcels accounted for 30.7% of traffic and 50.8% of revenues

In 2022, among operators with 50 or more employees, 69.3% of all parcels were domestic, 20.1% were from other countries (inbound international parcels) and 10.6% were from Portugal and sent abroad (outbound international parcels). In total, international parcels accounted for 30.7% of traffic.

In terms of revenues, domestic orders accounted for 49.2%, inbound international orders for 17.6% and outbound international orders for 33.1%. In other words, international orders accounted for 50.8% of the turnover of this service.

The European Economic Area was the source or destination of 28.8% of orders and generated 33.9% of revenue

Approximately 98.7% of international orders received in Portugal and 84.8% of international outbound orders came from or were destined for European Economic Area (EEA) countries.

Taking into account all international parcels (inbound and outbound), the EEA was the origin or destination of 93.9% of international parcels and 28.8% of total traffic.

EEA countries accounted for 90.5% of inbound international parcels and 54.1% of outbound international parcels. Overall, the EEA accounted for 66.8% of international parcel turnover and 33.9% of total turnover for this service.

Unit revenue from parcels was EUR 5.28

In 2022, the average revenue per parcel order was EUR 5.28. Unit revenue for domestic orders was the lowest (EUR 3.75), followed by unit revenue for inbound international orders (EUR 4.64) and outbound international parcels (EUR 16.52).

Average revenue per parcel for traffic to a non-EEA destination was 4.7 times higher than that for traffic to an EEA destination, while the revenue per parcel for traffic from non-EEA countries was 8.1 times higher than that for traffic from EEA countries.

The number of full-time employees accounted for 85.3%

The number of full-time employees accounted for 85.3% of the total number of employees involved in the delivery of parcels, while part-time and temporary employees accounted for 2.2% and 12.5% respectively. These employees may not be exclusively engaged in parcel delivery.

83.8% of subcontractors delivered parcels

In 2022, 10 parcel delivery services subcontracted 709 companies. Most of the subcontractors were involved in parcel distribution (83.8%) and transport (20.6%).
