GSMA - Mobile World Congress - Barcelona


Last 2-3 March Fátima Barros took part as main speaker in the Ministerial Programme’s workshop on competition, focusing on the topic of “A European View on Mobile Competition”.

The presentation centred on the impact of mobile sector competition on consumers and sought to provide an overview of the effects of recent mergers in the European mobile communications sector as well as between mobile and cable TV operators. She also participated in the workshop’s discussion panel along with Christian Salbaing (Hutchinson Whampoa), Ivo Ivanovski (Minister for Information Society of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) and Stephen Howard (HSBC), moderated by Martin Cave.

Accompanied by the two BEREC Vice-Chairs (William Eschweiler and Göran Marby), Fátima Barros met on 3 March with the Head of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Tom Wheeler. The following topics were discussed at the meeting: net neutrality and competition in the infrastructures area.

A meeting was also held between the BEREC members attending the event and the GSMA Chief Regulatory Office Group in Europe, where Fátima Barros described BEREC’s strategic pillars, key trends and development in the sector as well as the main challenges facing the organisation in coming years.
