Nine out of ten Internet customers subscribe to bundles of services


As at the end of 2nd quarter 2014 (2Q14), penetration of broadband Internet access services at a fixed location in Portugal was reported at 25.7 per 100 inhabitants in the case of fixed access, and 37.5 inhabitants per 100 inhabitants in the case of mobile access with actual use. Penetration of the fixed broadband service (residential customers) was reported at 55.9 per 100 private households and 37.8 per 100 conventional dwellings.

It is estimated that, at the end of 2Q14, about 9 out of 10 customers with the fixed broadband internet access service had acquired the service as part of a bundle of services.

At the end of 2Q14, there were about 2.7 million fixed accesses to the Internet in Portugal (an increase of 2 percent compared to the previous quarter). Compared to the same period of 2013, the number of fixed accesses increased by 8.6 percent.

The main technology used for fixed broadband Internet access continues to be asymmetric digital subscriber lines (ADSL), used by 40.4 percent of the service's users. Cable modem (37.1 percent) and Internet over optical fibre - FTTH/B - (19.9 percent) are the second and third most used technologies, while optical fibre/ FTTH was the technology that contributed most to the growth reported in the number of accesses (increasing 7.1 percent over the period and by 30.3 percent versus 2nd quarter 2013).

Grupo PT's share of fixed accesses was reported at 49.8 percent, a decline of around 0.3 percentage points compared to the previous quarter. Grupo NOS had a 34.9 percent share of accesses, declining by about 0.6 percentage points from the previous quarter. For the 5th consecutive quarter, Vodafone was the provider that added the largest number of subscribers in net terms, reporting a share of 8.9 percent at the end of the quarter.

There were 3.9 million Internet users in Portugal who actually used mobile broadband (an increase of 0.2 percent over the previous quarter). The main driver of this trend has been the increase in the number of smartphone users.

As regards provider shares of active mobile broadband customers, MEO reported a share of 48.2 percent, followed by Vodafone and the NOS with 28.7 and 22.9 percent, respectively.

At the end of 2Q14, the majority of users (78 percent) had contracted theoretical maximum speeds in excess of 20 Mbps. About 48.5 percent had accesses with speeds above 30 Mbps and 22.6 percent had more than 100 Mbps. Approximately 11.1 percent used speeds between 2 and 10 Mbps.
