Network of postal establishments - 2013

ANACOM has released the report on the network of postal establishments of CTT - Correios de Portugal (CTT), concessionaire company of the universal postal service, and of other undertakings where services conceded to CTT are provided.

According to the report, at the end of 2013, there were 2,443 postal establishments in operation (119 fewer than at the end of 2012), comprising 618 permanent post offices (122 fewer than in the previous year), 5 mobile post offices (3 fewer than in the previous year) and 1,820 postal service offices (6 more than in the previous year).

Overall, there was a reduction in the number of postal establishments in 2013 compared to the end of 2012, after a stabilization in the total number of postal establishments between 2011 and 2012.

At the end of 2013, there was at least one post office in every municipality, with the exception of Gavião and Pedrógão Grande which had a postal service office only. Considering the entire network of postal establishments, 95.1 percent of municipalities (293 municipalities, in line with 2012) had two or more postal establishments.

According to CTT, 75.6 percent of postal establishments provided the following concession services: non-priority mail, priority mail, pre-paid mail, registered mail, insured items, parcels, books, issuance and payment of postal orders. Meanwhile, all post offices provided the full range of all concession services.

Based on data provided by the Universal Postal Union (UPU) with reference to 2012, Portugal compares favourably with the other Member States of the European Union (EU), surpassing the EU average both in terms of coverage and in terms of postal density.

Pursuant to the universal postal service concession, ANACOM received 138 notifications from CTT, as follows: 51 regarding the closure of post offices; 72 regarding the closure of post offices and their replacement by post agencies; 8 regarding the reduction of opening hours; and 7 on the extension of post office opening hours.
