The presidency of the European Union (EU), assumed by Cyprus on 1 July 2012, has set out the following priorities in its programme for the telecommunications sector:
- examine the relevant legislative proposal which aims at strengthening and modernizing the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) with a new expanded mandate for the security of cyberspace.
- support the European Commission (EC) in the revision of the Public Service Information Directive on the Reuse of public sector information;
- establish guidelines for trans-European telecommunications networks to attract private investment to develop the necessary infrastructure to interconnect the Internet at high speeds through EU funding, in order to achieve the strategic goals of 2020 in the "Digital Agenda for Europe" and release the potential of web services;
- submit a proposal for the regulation of e-identification and trust services for electronic transactions in the single market, that will provide the legal framework for recognition of e-signatures, e-identification and e-authentication.
