35th World Standards Day, 14 October

''Standards connect the world''. This is the slogan for the celebration of 35th World Standards Day, which took place on 14th October, on the same date of the closure of the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA-04), held in Florianópolis, Brazil.

Development and maintenance of international standards, as technical patterns that harmonize and provide effectiveness, efficiency, quality, safety, interoperability, reliability and compatibility of projects and businesses, are the objective of the international standardization system, which integrates the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

Standards connect societies, markets and, mainly, create a bridge in the process of knowledge, since they “help connect developing countries and/or transition economies to “state-of-the-art technological know-how”, which enables them to increase their export capability and competitiveness”, according to the message disclosed by those organizations.

At national level, through a cooperation protocol with the national standardization body IPQ - Instituto Português da Qualidade, ANACOM is the body with sector standardization duties (ONS/ANACOM) for the communications (telecommunications and posts) and electromagnetic compatibility sector.
