ICT use by Portuguese families


There is an increasing number of Portuguese families using information and communication technologies (ICT) in Portugal, as shown by the results of the ''Survey on the use of Information and Communication Technologies by Families 2006'', conducted by the Instituto Nacional de Estatística (INE - National Statistical Institute) in cooperation with UMIC - Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (Knowledge Society Agency), between April and May 2006.

According to this study, during the first quarter of 2006, 45.4 per cent of Portuguese households had a computer, 35.2 per cent had Internet and 24 per cent had broadband, an increase regarding the levels of 2005. In the same period, 42.5 per cent of individuals aged between 16 and 74 years old used the computer and 35.6 accessed the Internet.

Regarding the use of electronic commerce, the study shows that during the first three months of 2006 about 13 per cent of Portuguese Internet users had purchased or ordered goods and services using the Internet. Regarding the most purchased goods and services, the highlight goes to the purchase of books, magazines, newspapers and e-learning material, mentioned by 36.4 per cent of the users of this type of commerce, followed by orders related with travelling and lodging (23.8 per cent) and the purchase of movies and music (23.3 per cent).
