About the city

"The Ria makes its way throughout the city, creating a unique entwining image between the aquatic and urban environment. The boats bestow an explosion of colour and animation to the city. This touching symbiosis is ever so present in the riverine quarters.

Small white-washed or tile-coated houses are mirrored onto the water. Narrow streets, filled with welcoming people, lead to enchantingly modest chapels, traces of long-held religious traditions.

A lingering gaze is lost embracingly in the endless mountain. Held in the mystery of early dawn, the sun carries mysticism to the landscape. In the growing afternoon dimness, there is a poetic romance of tones flowing in the air either purplish-blue or orange when the sunset scatters throughout the channels, casting a thoughtful gaze towards the sea.

The fish market - displaying an interesting architectural iron structure - where one can feel the pulsation of the city’s heartbeat, unable to break hold of its much-loved traditions yet also welcoming new change.

In the surroundings of the old Saint Anthony Franciscan convent, the Garden and City Park Infante D.Pedro were born. A lake and a garden make this a pleasant green area that lasts throughout the city and spans into lawns and small richly-coloured gardens.

Shops throughout the new avenues bring refreshing-vitality and dynamism, which can be felt all over the municipality.

The University brought a new life to the city: side by side with urban development, a more active cultural life, the happiness of youth, the creation of new entertainment venues.”(Source: Rota da Luz)
