Comparisons of prices of USPs in the European Union

ANACOM has released the study which it conducted on "Comparisons of prices of the providers of the universal postal service in the European Union".

This study compares the prices of postal services provided by universal service providers (USPs) in Portugal and elsewhere in the European Union (EU). By following the same criteria used in the study conducted by ANACOM in 2008, the study also involves an assessment of how prices have changed.

Comparison was made of the prices of the following services: national priority and non priority mail up to 20 grams in standardized format; cross-border intra-community mail in the European Union up to 20 grams  in standardized format; and national parcels up to 2kg. Comparisons were made using purchasing power parity (PPP).

The compiled data leads to the conclusion that, in the European Union and in relation to 2008, the prices of the services examined have increased, as reflected in increases in the respective averages, with an increase of 6% reported in the average of the national non-priority services up to 20g. In terms of PPP, the increase in the average was lower for all services.

In Portugal, for the services analyzed, the price of national parcels up to 2kg and the price of priority national correspondence up to 20g remained unchanged, while prices for other services increased, albeit by less than the average prices of services in the EU. As such, a slight overall improvement was seen in the position of prices in Portugal compared to other EU countries. As in 2008, with the exception of non-priority cross-border intra-community mail up to 20g, the prices in Euros are below the EU average. When analyzed from the perspective of PPP, it can also be seen that prices are lower than the EU average, with the exception of non-priority cross-border intra-community and priority national mail up to 20g.
