World Telecommunication Policy Forum (WTPF-09) in Lisbon - 22 to 24 April


This week, Portugal is hosting the fourth World Telecommunication Policy Forum (WTPF-09) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a specialist agency for telecommunications of the United Nations. The forum will be held in the Lisbon Congress Centre from 22 to 24 April.

The WTPF is held on a non-regular basis by the ITU with the goal of promoting discussion and the exchange of views on emerging issues of regulation and telecommunications policy, in particular, global and inter-sectoral issues. As such, the main topics up for discussion at the WTPF-09 are:

i) Matters of public policy related to the Internet;
ii) Next generation networks;
iii) Emerging issues related to telecommunications policy and regulation;
iv) Analysis of new and emerging issues related to the ITU's Regulation of International Telecommunications.

The Forum will be presided over by the Secretary of State Assistant and for Public Works and Communications, Paulo Campos, and the forum will be attended by the Minister of Public Works, Transport and Communications, Mário Lino, in its opening, with the President of the Republic due to attend the closing ceremony. European Commissioner, Viviane Reding, will also participate by means of a pre-recorded message.

WTPF-09 will be preceded, on 21 April, by a strategic dialogue on ICT in the context of the current economic crisis, to be opened with the participation of the Prime Minister, José Sócrates, and the ITU Secretary General, Dr. Hamadoun I. Touré. In addition to such high profile figures, this debate will see the participation of speakers from renowned international organisations such as Microsoft, Ericsson, Intel, Cisco and Nokia.

This event is open to the participation of the general public, although prior registration with the ITU is required.
