Protecting privacy in the digital age

In her latest weekly video message, given on the theme of privacy in the current digital era, European Commissioner, Viviane Reding, told Europeans that she shared their concerns about the risks to the privacy of the each user's data arising from the new world of intrusive technologies such as social networking or smart chips (RFID).

In her message, the Commissioner gives an assurance that the EU executive is reinforcing European privacy laws with the reform of the EU's telecoms rules, on which the European Parliament is about to vote.

Viviane Reding also confirms her belief that the next Commission, which will come into office by the end of this year, should work to review European legislation on personal data protection, a reform which she says is long overdue, in view of the rapid technological development.
