UNESCO launches World Digital Library

On 21 April, at its headquarters in Pairs, UNESCO will launch the World Digital Library, a project of the United States Library of Congress, with participation from thirty-two UNESCO associated institutions, from countries such as Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Egypt, China, Russia, France, Iraq, Israel, Japan, Great Britain, Mexico, South Africa and USA.

The proposal to set up a World Digital Library was made in 2005 by the United States Library of Congress, with the objective of increasing the volume and variety of cultural content available on the Internet.

This new Digital Library will be available in seven languages (Chinese, Arabic, French, English, Spanish, Russian and Portuguese) and will allow free access to maps, books, musical scores, recordings, films, and photographs sourced from archives around the world.
