European Telecoms Commissioner seeks to empower consumers

In a video message released on 24 of March, Viviane Reding, the European Commissioner for telecommunications, launched an initiative whereby she will speak to European consumers every week on various relevant issues, with the first of these messages addressing the situation faced by consumers in the European telecommunications market.

In her message, the Commissioner calls on the European Parliament and the Council of EU Telecoms Ministers to be ambitious as they enter the final negotiations on new rules strengthening competition and consumer rights in a single market for telecoms like mobile phone services and internet connections.

Specifically the Commissioner intends that all Europeans are able to change their telephone operator - mobile or fixed - within a single day, as already happens in Ireland and Malta, in comparison with 38 days in Poland or the 15 days in Italy.

Next week, the Commissioner will speak on how Europe can make use of modern technologies to increase the energy efficiency of European products and services.
