Study Group - SG5 (Terrestrial Services) - WP 5A - Geneva


Geneva served as venue from 28 October to 6 November 2008 for the second meeting in the 2008-2011 study cycle of working party 5A (WP 5A), on land mobile service excluding IMT, amateur and amateur by satellite, of ITU-R Study Group 5 (SG5).

The 123 documents submitted for the consideration of WP 5A were divided according to subject matter into seven subgroups, as follows:

  • Subgroup 5A-1 - Amateur service;
  • Subgroup 5A-2 - Intelligent transport systems (ITS);
  • Subgroup 5A-3 - Public protection and trunking systems;
  • Subgroup 5A-4 - Interference and sharing;
  • Subgroup 5A-5 - Technology;
  • Subgroup 5A-7 - Wireless systems including RLANs;
  • Ad Hoc Subgroup - Vocabulary.

The following among the documents analysed are particularly noteworthy:

  • Revision of new Recommendation on millimetric waves for ITS (intelligent transport system) radiocommunication systems;
  • Revision of new Recommendation concerning intelligent transport systems (ITS) - goals and requirements;
  • Revision of new Recommendation on harmonisation of frequencies for public protection and rescue operations in the 380-470 MHz band in some Region 1 countries and the 746-806 MHz band in Region 2 and some Region 3 countries;
  • Modification of Recommendation ITU-R M.1801 - Radio interface standards for broadband wireless access systems, including mobile and nomad applications, which operate in mobile service in frequency bands under 6 GHz;
  • Revision of new Recommendation concerning the performance and availability of requirements and goals for wireless access systems;
  • Revision of new Report on the study of isolation between VHF land mobile radio antennas in surrounding areas;
  • Revision of new Report on information for administrations that hope to reach agreement on compatibility within land mobile service for sharing between land mobile service stations and terrestrial stations of other services that operate in the neighbouring country [in frequency bands above 29.7 MHz];
  • Revision of ITU-R Report 224-4 on the concept of adaptable antennas and key technical aspects.

Also noteworthy was the start of transferring the work on fixed wireless access (FWA) from working party WP 5C to WP 5A, as agreed at the first SG5 meeting.
