www.anacom.pt - new communications website available from Tuesday

/ Updated on 24.01.2008

The National Communications Authority (ANACOM) is endowed with a new Internet website from 00:00 Tuesday. The main novelties include new thematic areas, On-Line Attendance, the introduction of navigation functions for citizens with special needs and reorganisation of its nearly 10,000 pages of information in Portuguese and English. The website's image has also been updated.

The new website maintains the vocabulary of its predecessor, presenting itself as a centre for information on the telecommunications and postal markets, targeting a specialised public. Yet it is also for users of such services, i.e., for all of us. Whatever the standpoint, www.anacom.pthttps://www.anacom.pt/render.jsp?categoryId=2958 aims to function as a tool for work and information.

The website enables the National Communications Authority to provide On-Line Attendance for citizens. Such service, previously only available at its physical premises in Lisbon, Oporto, Madeira and the Azores, is now offered via cyberspace. It covers applications for planners and installers of telecommunications infrastructures in buildings (ITED), the filing of complaints regarding protection from radio reception, the scheduling of aptitude tests for amateur radio activity and requests for various kinds of registration.

The On-Line Attendance service also aims to answer questions from users, in this first phase on fixed telephone service, audiotext, the national numbering plan, local loop unbundling and the ITED regime. Likewise available for consultation will be a glossary of technical terms with several hundred entries.

Citizens with special needs will henceforth find it easier to navigate and consult information. To this end, all images are subtitled and adaptable to Braille interfaces, enabling their perception by the blind. Content is provided clearly, to facilitate comprehension by citizens with cognitive difficulties; fonts may be enlarged for viewing by the visually impaired and mouseless navigation has been made possible. Site help is also available for visitors less familiar with the Internet.

All these functions are in accordance with recommendations of the Access Unit of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the European Union Information Society Technologies Programme and the W3C - Web Accessibility Initiative.

The www.anacom.pthttps://www.anacom.pt/render.jsp?categoryId=2958 website also respects all the good quality practices for the construction of Internet sites recommended by the Interministerial Commission for the Information Society. This follows on the work undertaken for the predecessor website, which earned first place in the Google search engine's categorisation for the directory of State and Government Institutions in Portugal and sixth place in the world directory of Telecommunications Regulatory Agencies.

An on-line Press Room has also been set up for the media and includes information and work resources for journalists. This room will subsequently provide news-related information.

The new ANACOM website was developed over the past several months by a team from the National Communications Authority, with the technical support of Neoris.

The National Communications Authority (ANACOM) is the Portuguese regulator for the telecommunications and postal markets, succeeding after publication of its statutes the Instituto das Comunicações de Portugal (ICP).
