ECC TG3 - Brest

/ Updated on 17.07.2006

The French city of Brest hosted on 1-3 March the seventh meeting of the ECC TG3-UWB (ultra wide band) working group, which completed the position CEPT is to send the European Commission in response to the mandate on UWB, whose main goal is to harmonise the use of radio spectrum by UWB systems in Europe, and which will be submitted for approval at the next meeting of the Electronic Communications Committee (ECC).

The main conclusions that may be drawn from this report is that the mask of the US regulator (the FCC ? Federal Communications Commission) for indoor UWB applications does not provide sufficient protection from interference by existing radio services, and that most of the radio services considered require stricter generic limits than those defined by the FCC mask.

Given that no solution has yet been reached for UWB?s introduction in Europe, work must continue until such has been achieved. The report proposes that work be carried out based on impact studies and that UWB requirements and detailed mitigation techniques be taken into account later.

The current status of the measures being carried out with prototype UWB devices was also presented at this meeting.
