The total revenue from postal services operated in competition was about 90,997,000 euros in the third quarter of 2004, a 0.6% decline in year-on-year terms.

Of the invoiced total, services not covered by the express mail category accounted for revenue of 56,733,000 euros, corresponding to 4.6% growth in year-on-year terms. From July through September express mail services invoiced 34,200,000 euros, for a year-on-year drop of 8.2%.

During the period under review the CTT held a share of 43% of revenue from express mail services, while in services not covered by this category its share was 97.5%.

Total registered revenue corresponds to postal traffic of 65 million objects. This figure corresponds to year-on-year growth of 5.6% in postal traffic open to competition, i.e., mailed correspondence whose price is above three times the reference tariff - priority mail (Correio Azul) up to 20 grams - that weighs more than 100 grams.

From July through September all postal traffic segments registered a decline, in both incoming and outgoing international as well as in national.

Regarding market shares, the CTT group improved its share of national postal traffic - 93.2% versus 93.1% in the previous quarter. In outgoing international postal traffic the CTT's share rose to 94.2%, versus 92.7% in the previous quarter, while in incoming international traffic the CTT group's share fell to 85.3% from the 88.2% registered in the previous quarter.

By service type, there was 8.9% year-on-year growth in express mail services and 5.4% growth in the others.

Also with respect to market shares, the set of new operators saw their market share rise in both the express mail segment, where they hold 60.2%, and in services not covered by the express mail category, where they attained a 3.5% share. The CTT's share was 39.8% in the first case and 96.5% in the second, figures comparable to the 44.3% and 95.9% at the end of 2003.

There were no variations in the postal density indicator, which remained at 535 inhabitants per access point. And according to ANACOM data, the postal capitation index stood at 6.2, versus 6.6 in the previous quarter. The sector's employment situation remained almost unchanged over the previous quarter. In year-on-year terms there was a 5.3% decline in employment, with the CTT responsible for this trend.

At the end of September 2004 there were, besides the CTT, three entities licensed to provide postal services not covered by the express mail category. There were 10 authorised providers in the express mail category at the end of September.
