Signing of an MoU - Paris

/ Updated on 01.08.2006

The Galileo system notifying administrations met on 5 November in Maisons-Alforts, Paris, France, to sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) concerning management of notifications to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for the operation of Galileo, the European system for satellite radionavigation service.

The MoU was signed by representatives of 12 administrations, among them the Portuguese administration, with only five of the total signatures absent.

A decision was made that the first meeting of the Steering Committee (SC), which succeeds the GLS Group, would be held in February or March 2005, when its members should be formally appointed ? one representative for each administration - and its future chairman named.

It was agreed that the Agence Nationale des Fréquences (ANFR) would take the initiative to ask administrations to appoint their respective representatives. At this first SC meeting the administrations that have notified filings should propose to the SC those they wish to be considered as Galileo Filings.

According to provisions of the MoU, it will take force on 5 December 2005.

The administrations present were also asked to consider adhesion to the Satellite Monitoring MoU, now in the Galileo context. It was mentioned that only six administrations signed that MoU and consequently supported all the associated expenses, which has become rather heavy.

The ANFR will subsequently sent to each administration a duly signed copy of the MoU.
