UMD-CE begins its activities

The Mission and Development Unit for Electronic Commerce (UMD-CE) was set up within ANACOM in May 2003, with the aim of studying the various issues related to electronic commerce. The creation of this UMD was seen to be necessary since, during the course of preparatory work on transposing Directive 2000/31/EC, concerning certain aspects of the information society, particularly electronic commerce, it became clear that ANACOM would be called upon to be the central supervisory body for the field of electronic commerce, for which this Authority did not have well-grounded experience.

At the start, the UMD-CE busied itself with studying these issues and producing opinions on the draft act to transpose Directive 2000/31/EC, co-ordinating with the Directorate for Regulation and Legal Issues, in the scope of consultations addressed to ANACOM by the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Economy. At present, the UMD-CE is setting up the infrastructure to enable an efficient performance of ANACOM?s supervisory functions in the field of electronic commerce.

This UMD, like others that may be set up for specific subjects, is not part of ANACOM?s permanent structure and has a limited time frame. In effect, it aims to prepare the permanent structure (which includes the various ANACOM Departments and Directorates) which will eventually integrate in the more or less near future such new topics and approaches that are deemed justified.

ANACOM also provides on this site diverse and updated information on the various aspects of electronic commerce, specifically via regularly published news items.

Issues related to electronic commerce may also be consulted in the section on the new regulatory framework (99 Review), as well as those published in the European Union portal on the community legal framework applicable to electronic commerce.
