New European Commission with positions allocated

The new President of the European Commission, Durão Barroso, announced yesterday in Brussels the policy portfolios and responsibilities of the 25 members of his team.

In the new Commission, Viviane Reding, from Luxemburg, will be in charge of the Information Society and Media dossier. The “Lisbon Strategy” dossier, however, will personally be coordinated by Durão Barroso.

The remaining Commissioners whose action, directly or indirectly, has repercussions in the electronic communications sector, are as follows: 

- Guenther Verheugen (Germany) - Vice President and Commissioner for Entreprise and Industry
- Charlie McCreevy (Ireland) - Commissioner for the Internal Market and Services
- Neelie Kroes (Netherlands) - Commissioner for Competition

The Finish Olli Rehn, who in July succeeded Erkki Liikanen in the  “Entreprise and Information Society” dossier, will be in charge of enlargement, as from 1 November, date on which the new Commission will  formally start functions (see The Commissionershttp://europa.eu.int/comm/commissioners/index_en.htm).
 
The first Commission’s informal meeting, whose mandate will last for five years, is scheduled for August 20.
