The agreement between the European Union (EU) and the United States (USA) on cooperation between the satellite-based navigation systems Galileo (Europe) and GPS ? Global Positioning System (USA) was signed by the representatives of both parties, Loyola de Palacio, European Commissioner for Energy and Transport, and Colin Powell, US Secretary of State, during the EU-USA Summit, held on 25 and 26 June, in Ireland (Castle Dromoland, County Clare).
After four years of negotiations, this cooperation agreement was concluded establishing the promotion, provision and use of those satellite-based navigation systems, on the basys of compatibility and interoperability of its operational standards, which will positively have repercussions in the respective users, who will be able to use both systems with the same type of equipment. Besides, this confirms the vocation of Galileo to the commercial use segment, apart from civil use, the market potential corresponding to three million users.
