Results of the Ministerial Meeting of Post and Telecommunications of CPLP


To intensify cooperation between the countries so as to ensure a global network of articulated interests of the CPLP communications systems, to take on the structuring nature of the communications system, to promote conditions for the creation and development of a true ?information society? in the CPLP countries, as well as of the Portuguese-speaking contents for the several information networks, so that the information society will also be of Portuguese speech, to ensure and promote multilateral consultations and contacts at the level of the sector international fora, namely, at the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and at the Universal Postal Union (UPU) and to make efforts aiming to create Portuguese-speaking poles in the international and regional communications bodies are some of the commitments undertaken at the VIII Ministerial Meeting of Post and Telecommunications of CPLP, with the approval and signature of Viseu Statement. 

It was the Minister of Economy, Mr. Carlos Tavares, who signed the Statement for Portugal.

This Meeting also decided to support the candidature put forward by Portugal, represented by Dr. Carlos Silva, from CTT - Correios de Portugal, to the position of General Director of the UPU International Secretariat, as well as the candidatures of the CPLP countries to the UPU permanent bodies, namely, to the Council of Administration (CA) and to the Postal Operations Council (POC). Also within the postal sector, the Meeting also decided to make special efforts to create the ?Lusofonia? philatelic theme, as a contribution for its cultural affirmation in the world.

The next Ministerial Meeting of Postal and Telecommunications Operators of the CPLP countries will be held in São Tomé e Príncipe, in 2005.

From 16 to 18 June, the General Meeting and the XII Forum of the Association of Postal and Telecommunications Operators of the Portuguese-speaking countries and territories (AICEP), under the theme ?Communications and Development) is also being held in Viseu.
