Meeting on the Safer Internet Action Plan

In order to inform and raise awareness among the intervening parties towards the urgency to conceive and promote a national project under the Safer Internet Action Plan ? in particular in what concerns hotlines to report illegal contents available online and the issue of safety in the Internet ? ANACOM promoted, last 24 March 2004, at Hotel Meridien, Lisbon, a meeting presided by its President, Álvaro Dâmaso, and coordinated by the head of the Mission and Development Unit for Electronic Commerce, Manuel Alves Monteiro.

This meeting was attended by a large number of people, including representatives from the Ministries of Economy, Science and Higher Education, Justice, Social Security and Labour, Internal Administration, Presidency and Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister, as well as from telecommunication operators, higher education establishments and other public and private institutions with a relevant interest in this matter.

In the debate, which was very participative, the relevance of the initiative of economic agents was particularly highlighted, since the success of the Internet business and the new communication technologies clearly depends on the creation and maintenance of a safe online environment. As key note, telecommunication operators, higher education establishments and other entities expressed their wish to cooperate in the creation and maintenance of a safe online environment and to evaluate their possible participation in projects of this nature, whereas the official entities represented expressed their availability to provide the necessary cooperation in the creation and promotion of national projects in these areas.

At the closing of this meeting, all entities represented were asked to send to ANACOM, within a short period of time, comments or suggestions regarding the next steps that should be made in order to implement the Safer Internet Action Plan in Portugal.
