ANACOM participates in the 22nd meeting of the OECD Network of Economic Regulators

ANACOM participated in the 22nd meeting of the OECD Network of Economic Regulators, held in Paris on 8 April 2024, on the theme: “Is your regulator using artificial intelligence, machine learning or big data analytics?”.

Focusing on the integration of emerging technologies into regulatory practice, the session brought together experts and regulators from around the world to provide a platform for sharing knowledge, innovative practices and challenges faced in the digital age.

ANACOM, represented by Luís Alexandre Correia, Deputy Director of Information and Innovation, presented GEO.ANACOM, ANACOM’s Geospatial Platform, an innovative solution for visualising, analysing and understanding geographic data related to electronic communications and postal services. The work carried out to identify “white areas”, defined as areas with insufficient or non-existent connectivity, and the support provided by this platform for strategic planning of investments in connectivity were also presented.

GEO.ANACOM also highlighted the importance of providing coverage maps with detail at address level, covering different technologies and download speeds. In addition, several layers of geo-referenced information on postal services, spectrum management, market statistics, spectrum monitoring and infrastructure, derived from ANACOM’s and operators’ internal activities, were shared with the audience.

Innovation was not limited to GEO.ANACOM. Luís Alexandre Correia also highlighted a project under development that applies Artificial Intelligence (AI) to complaints management. This project aims to automate the classification of complaints and the generation of automatic responses, using supervised machine learning algorithms to improve efficiency and response times.

Portugal’s commitment to technological innovation in regulation was clearly demonstrated in this session, showing how technology can be used to solve complex problems and improve regulatory effectiveness. Portugal’s presentation at the 22nd session of the Network of Economic Regulators not only highlighted the country as a leader in regulatory innovation, but also set a benchmark for future discussions and developments in the field of technological regulation at the global level.
