Fixed broadband Internet access traffic increased 48.1% in the first half of 2018, reaching a new record high. Average monthly traffic per fixed access was reported at 96.6 GB in the first six months of the year (27.5 GB more than in the same period of 2017). This increase results from the increase in the number of accesses and greater levels of use.
MEO was the provider with the highest share of total traffic (39.6%), followed by NOS (32.7%), Vodafone (22.4%), and Nowo/Oni (Grupo Apax) with 4.4%.
Over the same period, the number of Internet accesses at a fixed location increased by 5.9% (+205 thousand accesses), bringing the total number of accesses to 3.67 million.
Optical fibre (FTTH) was the leading form of fixed broadband Internet access, accounting for 42% of accesses, followed by cable, with 31.9%, and ADSL with 18.4% of fixed broadband Internet accessed. LTE at a fixed location accounted for 7.7% of total accesses.
In the last two six-month periods, accesses supported by FTTH have seen their highest rate of growth so far in absolute terms (above 150 thousand accesses every six months). In the last twelve months, optical fibre saw a 25.5% increase in the number of accesses (an additional 313 thousand accesses), reaching a total of 1.54 million accesses.
In the first half of the year, MEO reported a 39.8% share of accesses (in line with the same period of 2017), followed by Grupo NOS with a share of 37% (- 0.7 percentage points) and Vodafone with a share of 18.9% (+0.9 percentage points). Nowo/ONI had a share of 4.1% (-0.1 percentage points).
The residential fixed broadband service had a penetration rate at the end of June of 74.7 per 100 private households, 2.1 percentage points more than in the same period of 2017.
