ANACOM visit to the European Maritime Safety Agency

On 9 April 2018, ANACOM visited the premises of the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) in Lisbon. ANACOM's delegation, led by João Cadete de Matos (Chairman), met the management of EMSA, led by Markku Mylly, to explore synergies, considering each organisation’s mission and methodology.

Following this meeting, another meeting will take place, this time at ANACOM's office in Barcarena, so that EMSA can learn more about ANACOM's radio spectrum management and monitoring activities.

EMSA supports the European Commission and Member States in the development and implementation of European legislation on maritime safety, accident prevention and pollution response.

To provide detailed and reliable information on different maritime activities, EMSA uses a set of systems to monitor shipping traffic globally and to detect and monitor spills of pollutants. These systems are operated by the Maritime Support Services Centre and the resulting information is collected and processed on an integrated monitoring platform that is shared with European authorities. In addition to its key monitoring role, the centre is also responsible for ensuring the coordination of maritime emergency response by establishing a common contact point between the European Commission and Member States.
