Award of the ANACOM-URSI Portugal Prize and Best Student Paper Award (2017 edition)


During the 11th Congress of the Portuguese Committee of URSI, Luísa Mendes, Chair of the Portuguese Committee of URSI, presented the ANACOM-URSI Portugal Prize and Best Student Paper Award (2017 edition), the first seeking to encourage creativity and rigour in scientific research work in Portugal and the second seeking to encourage young authors.

The ANACOM-URSI Portugal Award was won by João Monteiro Felício, for his research work of great scientific and social impact "Microwave Breast Cancer Screening: Experimental Validation".

João Felício completed an Integrated Master's Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in 2014. As well as being a doctoral student at IST and researcher at the Telecommunications Institute (IT), he has also been a visiting assistant professor at ISCTE - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (ISCTE-IUL) since September 2017.

In 2015, at the 9th Congress of the Portuguese Committee of URSI, he was distinguished for the best poster presented by a student, with the work "Microwave imaging to detect targets in human Phantoms using a radar algorithm in the frequency domain".

The Best Student Paper Award was won by Carolina Gouveia, Integrated Master's student in Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications, University of Aveiro, with the work "Bio-radar performance evaluation for different antenna design”.

Second place was awarded to Hafssaa Latioui, of IT, for the work "Electromagnetic transparency in a material with two distinct topological phases", and 3rd place to Vera da Silva Pedras, of IST, for the work "Development of QoE models (No Reference) for voice and Web Browsing based on 3G/4G radio measurements".
