ITU Council meeting - Geneva


The ITU Council, responsible for managing the organisation between Plenipotentiary Conferences, met from last 25 May to 2 June in Geneva.

This Council session was chaired by Julie Zoller (United States of America) and attended by 47 of the 48 member states with seats on the Council (Greece was absent), 38 member states as observers (among them Portugal), 7 sector members and 3 regional telecom organisations.

The following were among the main results:

  • decision on the future of the ITU headquarters;
  • constitution of the expert group on the International Telecommunication Regulations;
  • revision of the Council resolutions on the ITU’s role in the ‘WSIS process’ and the ITU’s contribution to the sustainable development goals;
  • clarification regarding the memorandum of understanding with Interpol;
  • decision on continuation of the memorandum of understanding with the DONA Foundation.

Significantly, two coordination meetings of the Committee for ITU Policy were also held, chaired by Portugal, as well as a European Union coordination meeting.
