Use of the 700 MHz band for wireless broadband

The European Commission (EC) has presented a draft decision on the use of the 694-790 MHz frequency band for wireless broadband electronic communications services, according to harmonised technical conditions laid down by the EC.

This decision is to be implemented in all Member States by 30 June 2020, in line with the implementation of 5G (5th generation mobile) in the same year.

In order to meet this deadline, Member States are required to approve and publish a plan and national timetable (national roadmaps) no later than 30 June 2017 and conclude cross-border coordination agreements by the end of this year that will smooth the transition and ensure network coverage.

The EC’s proposal, which is part of the strategy for the creation of the Digital Single Market, seeks to improve Internet access for all Europeans while preventing interference, and will contribute to the development of cross-border applications.

The Decision will enter into force following formal approval by the European Parliament and the Council and its subsequent publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
