Joint workshop between ECC WG NaN and DG CONNECT - Brussels

A meeting in workshop format concerning the digital single market was held on 7 December 2015 in Brussels, focusing on the respective market strategy adopted on 6 May 2015.

Presentations were given by members of the working group on Numbering and Networks (WG NaN) and its project teams (PT NP – Number Portability, FNI – Future Numbering Issues, and ES – Emergency Services), representatives from the EC’s Directorate General for Communication Networks, Content and Technologies (DG Connect) and outside bodies invited to take part in the workshop.

The following topics were considered:

  • revision of the regulatory framework from the electronic commerce perspective;
  • WG NaN’s role and function in the numbering area;
  • key challenges for the development of machine-to-machine (M2M) services and the internet of things (IoT) in the scope of the digital single market (DSM);
  • maintenance of trustworthy identification;
  • questions associated to competition, including number portability;
  • Europe’s 112 emergency number and regulatory challenges unleashed by changing technology and market development.

This was the second meeting between DG Connect and WG NaN, an initiative that is expected to continue, namely in the numbering area.
