Safer Internet Day 2014

Safer Internet Day is being marked today, 11 February 2014. This is an international event, celebrated annually on the second day of the second week of the second month of the year by the European Internet Safety Network (InSafe), a cooperation network supported by the European Commission (EC); its goal is to promote awareness and understanding among citizens about safer Internet use, in particular among children and young people.

The 2014 theme of the Day is "Let's create a better internet together" and, as in previous years, a variety of local, national and international events are being held to mark the day, taking place across more than 100 countries.

In Portugal the activities are being led by Projeto Internet Segura (Safer Internet Project), run by a consortium coordinated by FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (Foundation for Science and Technology), also involving the DGE - Direção Geral da Educação (Directorate General of Education), the Ministry of Education, FCCN - Fundação para a Computação Científica Nacional (Foundation for National Scientific Computing), IPDJ - Instituto Português do Desporto e Juventude (Portuguese Sport and Youth Institute) and Microsoft Portugal.  There will be a range of different information, awareness and training events held in partnership with councils and municipal libraries, Internet spaces, local development associations, digital inclusion centres, cultural and recreational communities and all institutions which contribute to the inclusion and mass spread of digital literacy.

Meanwhile, in Brussels, EC Vice-president, Neelie Kroes, will be awarding prizes for the "European Award for Best Content for Kids" - this competition aims to encourage the production of content that enables children and young people to learn, play, discover and invent online.
