ITU Policy Committee (Com-ITU) meeting - Belgrade

Belgrade hosted last 28-29 November a meeting of the CEPT Committee for ITU Policy (Com-ITU). Chaired by Marcin Krasuski of Poland, the committee is responsible for European coordination with a view to participation in activities of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

The Belgrade meeting continued preparations for two major ITU events scheduled for 2014, the 2014 Plenipotentiaries Conference (PP-14), to be held from 20 October to 7 November in Busan, South Korea, and the 2014 World Telecommunications Development Conference (WTDC-14), from 31 March to 11 April.

Regarding PP-14, coordinators were identified for some of the most significant issues that will be discussed at that conference. The European coordinator for PP-14, Wojciech Berezowski of Poland, reported on the main topics discussed at a forum sponsored by South Korea which gathered coordinators from the various regions.

Internet-associated issues were discussed, given that 2014 is anticipated to be a very important year for those matters in various international organisations. The WSIS+10 High Level Event will be held, along with a summit meeting organised by Brazil. The group reflected on the impact those events may have on preparations for PP-14.

Regarding WTDC-14, Com-ITU continued to work out Europe’s position and priorities for that conference. Progress was made writing the European common proposals (ECPs) and it was agreed that those proposals should be completed and formally adopted at the next Com-ITU meeting.

Com-ITU also debated the participation of observers in group meetings.

The next Com-ITU meeting will be held on 13-16 January in Warsaw.
