In 3rd quarter 2012 (3Q12), total traffic from postal services in Portugal totalled about 228 million objects, making about 21.4 postal items per capita; this represents a decline of 7.1 per percent compared to 2Q12. The reported variations are within the forecast range resulting from the historic trend and estimated seasonal effects.

Express mail traffic totalled 8.4 million objects, corresponding to 3.7 percent of total traffic and with a decline of 2.2 percent over the quarter. In the case of non-express mail traffic, which constitutes the majority of traffic, with 96.3 percent, there was a reduction of 7.2 percent in relation to 2Q12.

In the period under review, 95.5 percent of all distributed objects were destined for the domestic market, while the remaining 4.5 percent were destined for other countries. About 96.5 percent of postal traffic is made up of correspondence. Parcels represent only 3.5 percent of total traffic.

There were 15 700 people employed in postal services, 452 more than in the previous quarter. However, compared to the same quarter of 2011, there were 340 fewer employees, which is directly influenced by the indicators of the companies of Grupo CTT.
