ITU World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT-12)

The World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT-12) will be held from 3 to 14 December 2012 in Dubai (United Arab Emirates); the conference is hosted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the specialist United Nations agency for telecommunications, also including the information society.

The objective of this event, for which 160 countries are registered to attend, is to review the International Telecommunication Regulations (ITR), an international treaty adopted in 1988.

At WCIT-12, various issues will be discussed of key importance to the operation of international telecommunications. Among the proposals submitted, highlighted issues include the use of numbering resources, international roaming, taxation of international telecommunications, IP interconnection, cyber security and Internet governance.

Portugal's position at the WCIT-12 is in line with the positions agreed in Europe, in particular in the context of the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT) and the European Union (EU).
