Meeting of the ITU Policy Committee (Com-ITU) - Istanbul

Istanbul hosted last 15-18 October a meeting of the CEPT committee in charge of co-ordinating European participation in ITU activities (Com-ITU), chaired by Marcin Krasuski of Poland.

At the meeting, Portugal chaired the drafting group set up by Com-ITU to prepare for the World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT-12) this coming 3-14 December in Dubai. Note that WCIT-12 is meant to revise the International Telecommunication Regulations (ITR), an international treaty whose current text was signed in 1988.

The group focused on developing and approving European common proposals (ECPs) to submit to WCIT-12. In this regard, it approved the proposed versions of various ITR articles and a proposed revision of Appendix 2 of the same treaty.

One discussion point in the preparations for WCIT-12 was the “Proposal to Address New Internet Ecosystem” from the European Telecommunication Network Operators Association (ETNO); CEPT agreed on a stance for that subject.

Regarding preparations for the World Telecommunications Standardisation Assembly (WTSA-12), likewise to be held in Dubai this 20-29 November, ECPs were approved on the following subjects:

  • modification of the ECP on revision of Resolution 73 (information and communication technologies and climate change);

  • ECP on revision of Recommendation A7 (focus groups: working methods and procedures) of ITU-T;

  • ECP on elimination of resolutions.
