41st meeting of ECC PT1 - Kristiansand

The Norwegian city of Kristiansand hosted last 17-21 September the 41st meeting of working group ECC PT1 (International Mobile Telecommunications - IMT), chaired by Didier Chaveau. ECC PT1 covers all issues concerning IMT. Its mission, among others, is to develop harmonisation measures for bands identified for IMT and respective channels, to carry out sharing/compatibility studies involving IMT and to co-ordinate European positions in the Radiocommunication Sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-R). At the most recent ECC meeting (held in May) the group’s terms of reference (ToR) were revised; the modification was meant to extend the scope of the group's work (i.e. to focus on mobile/fixed networks (MFCN) without also affecting the study of IMT).

A highlight of the meeting was completion of the revision of Decision CEPT (06)01 on the core band of UMTS (2 GHz), which encompasses only the FDD bands 1920-1980 MHz/2110-2170 MHz.

The response to the second European Commission mandate on mobile communications in aircraft was also finalised. It is meant to evaluate compatibility issues deriving from the inclusion of other bands/technologies beyond those currently considered in Decision 2008/294/EC. In conclusion, the report puts forward inclusion of the 1800 MHz (LTE) and 2 GHz (UMTS) bands.

Lastly, note that ECC PT1 will study the introduction of UMTS in the 2 GHz (FDD mode) and 2.6 GHz (LTE) bands as additional systems to use on board vessels.
