Fixed service maintains growth trend

/ Updated on 05.09.2012

At the end of 2nd quarter 2012 (2Q2012), the stock of main telephone accesses was reported at 4.5 million accesses, an increase of 0.1 percent over the previous quarter and of 0.9 percent compared to the same quarter of 2011, in line with the forecast range resulting from the estimated historical trend.

The penetration rate reported with regard to main telephone accesses was reported at 42.7 accesses per 100 inhabitants and at 57 per 100 conventional dwellings in terms of direct access. The increase in the number of accesses results mainly from take up of new multiple play offers supported over high-speed networks (optical fibre/FTTH/B and cable TV). The category of accesses which are included in these offers increased by 5.2 percent compared to 1Q12 and by 28.7 percent since 2Q2011.

Accesses using alternative networks other than the traditional network represented 37.3 percent of main telephone accesses in 2Q2012. Meanwhile, the downward trend in the number of fixed telephone service (FTS) accesses was reversed in late 2008 with the new take up of multiple-play offers.

Public pay-telephones maintained a downward trend, and in 2Q2012 there were about 25 thousand, with a decrease reported of about 4.3 percent over the previous quarter and of 18.7 percent compared to the same quarter of 2011.

At the end of this period, Grupo Portugal Telecom was responsible for 57.6 percent of total main accesses, 0.4 percentage points fewer than in 1Q12. The second largest operator was reported as Grupo ZON Multimédia, with a market share increasing by 0.7 percentage points over the same period to 19 percent.

The reported volumes of FTS voice minutes and of calls were in line with the forecast range resulting from the estimated trend and seasonal effects. In relation to the previous quarter, the volume of FTS voice minutes and volume of calls declined by 0.1 and 2 percent, respectively. In year-on-year terms, there was an increase of 5.8 percent in the volume of minutes and a decrease of 0.6 percent in the volume of calls. The increase in traffic in terms of minutes compared to 2Q2011 and the consequent increase in the average duration of calls (an additional 12 seconds year-on-year) stem from the increased number of subscribers to the service and to bundled offers that allow free calls to fixed network numbers.
