Public Audience on the Consumer Agenda - Brussels

A the invitation of the Directorate General for Health and Consumers (DG SANCO) of the European Commission (EC), a public session was held last 9 February in Brussels to prepare the European Consumer Agenda. The theme topic was “the future of European strategy in the consumer policy domain”.

The session was attended by representatives of consumer support services and associations, many of them of government nature, from several European countries, as well as national regulatory authorities from various member states active in distinct economic sectors.

The working agenda mainly focused on sharing ideas and experience to work out strategy pathways regarding consumer policy in the European Union. The work ended with the conviction that steps will be taken at European level to strengthen consumer confidence, which is particularly weak given the current economic and financial situation.

The European Consumer Agenda is being prepared by DG SANCO in collaboration with the Directorate General of Justice. ANACOM was asked to take part in this session due to its participation in the Experts Group on Consumer Complaints which since early 2009 has been advising the Commission with respect to the preparation and proposed Europe-wide adoption of a harmonised method for classifying and reporting consumer complaints, deemed essential to ensure better monitoring of how the market functions at European level.
