UPU publishes study on electronic postal services

The Universal Postal Union (UPU) has released the study Measuring postal e-services development: an industry perspective, which demonstrates the future importance of electronic postal services and outlines their development over the last 20 years.

The study examines the deployment of electronic postal services in the UPU's member countries, seeking to reach an understanding on the degree of their development and to assess their impact on the postal business, taking into account the differences in pace, scope and degrees of success of innovation among countries, regions and markets.

The document reveals that electronic postal services are growing globally and that seventy percent of postal operators worldwide consider these services of strategic importance for the future of the postal service. The study shows that the innovative capacity of a country, as well as the development of regulation and infrastructure related to information and communication technology (ICT) are determining factors in the development of electronic postal services.

With the intention that it becomes an instrument of support to postal operators, the UPU will carry out this study regularly, helping operators identify and assess the impact of possible key factors which impact the development of electronic postal services, facilitating the development of a worldwide digital postal network .
