ITU Council meeting - 2011 session - Geneva


Geneva hosted last 11-21 October a meeting of the ITU Council, the body in charge of managing the organisation between each Plenipotentiary Conferences (PP).

Highlights included the approval of several decisions and resolutions:

  • Decision 562 - Holding of the 5th World Telecommunications Policy Forum (WTPF), a three-day event to be held in Geneva in 2013;

  • Decision 561 - The 2012 Council session will be held in Geneva from the afternoon of 4 July 2012 until 13 July 2012;

  • Decision 560 - The next ITU Plenipotentiary Conference will be held from 20 October to 7 November 2014 in Busan, South Korea;

  • Resolution 1336 - Creation of the Council working group (WG) on International Internet-related Public Policy Issues. The Council agreed on the terms of this group's mandate;

  • Resolution 1335 - The 2012 World Telecommunications Standardisation Assembly (WTSA-12) and the 2012 World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT-12) will be respectively held on 20-29 November 2012 and 3-14 December 2012 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates;

  • Resolution 1334 - ITU Role in the Overall Review of the Implementation of the Outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society;

  • Resolution 1333 - Resolution concerning the principles to be followed when creating, managing and eliminating Council working groups. The resolution lists a number of criteria to follow which should lead to the end of the WG's activities;

  • Resolution 1332 - ITU role in the Implementation of the WSIS Outcomes up to 2015 and Future Activities beyond WSIS+10;

  • Resolutions 1331, 1330, 1329 and 1328 - Operational plans for the 2012-15 period, respectively for Sectors D, T and R, as well as for the ITU secretary-general;

  • Resolution 1327 - Establishes that 2012 World Information Society Day will be dedicated to the theme topic "Women and Girls in ICT".

Note also that the ITU's budget for the 2012-13 period was approved.
