Meeting of the Committee for ITU Policy (Com-ITU) - Istanbul

The CEPT Committee in charge of European co-ordination with a view to participation in ITU activities (Com-ITU) met last 22-23 March in Istanbul.

The main discussion point was revision of the International Telecommunications Regulation (ITR). The ITR is an international treaty adopted in 1988 and ratified by 178 member States which sets out the way international telecommunications services are agreed upon by operators and service providers. To prepare for the fourth meeting of the ITU Council working group, scheduled for 4-6 April 2011 in Geneva, Com-ITU prepared CEPT's contribution for discussion at that meeting. That contribution presents a proposal to revise the current articles, as well as the region’s position regarding inclusion of the new topics suggested at the World Telecommunications Policy Forum held in Lisbon in 2009.

Generally speaking, Portugal called for simplification as far as possible of the ITR review, urging great caution about including new themes. Portugal also presented a document it authored showing contributions submitted to the ITU since 2009 by the various countries/regions.

The next Com-ITU meeting has been scheduled for May 2011 in Cluj, Romania.
