Committee for ITU Policy meeting - Helsinki

The Committee for ITU Policy (Com-ITU), a CEPT body in charge of co-ordinating European participation in activities of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), held a meeting last 13-14 December 2010 in Helsinki.

The meeting sought to weigh results of the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference (Guadalajara, 4-22 October 2010), and considered positive those achieved by CEPT. It also identified some aspects of the co-ordination and defence of European proposals which should be reworked. The committee also concluded that it would be useful to reflect on how the Plenipotentiary Conference functions, given the time made available for policy-related activities in detriment to technical debates, the main responsibility of this ITU body.

Regarding the preparation of future work, the need to establish two project teams to prepare for the ITU World Telecommunications Standardisation Assembly and the World International Telecommunications Conference, both to be held in 2012, was put forward.

This and other matters will again be discussed at Com-ITU’s next meeting, scheduled for March 2011.
