World Telecommunication Day 2003

The World Telecommunication Day 2003 celebrations will happen tomorrow, under the theme ?Helping all of the world?s people to communicate?.

Instituted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and annually celebrated in the 17 May, the World Telecommunication Day helps to remind us, through public campaigns, exhibitions and other activities, the importance of the information and communication technologies for the societies development process.

This year, taking into account the accomplishment of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), to be held in the next month of December, and bearing in mind the challenges of the Information Society, Yoshio Utsumi, ITU Secretary-General, underlines the importance of all countries commitment in the consolidation of a shared vision concerning the ?information age?, allowing them, developing countries in particular, to fill in the existing difficulties at this level.

In the scope of the celebrations of this Day, the Fundação Portuguesa das Telecomunicações (FPC) will inaugurate, in the 27 May, the Interactive Future House, with the launching of a book subordinated to the same theme, and the exhibition of  Portugal Telecom Art.
