OECD Economic Survey for Portugal

It is available the OECD Economic Surveys - Portugal 2004, recently published by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). This study points out the main challenges of the Portuguese economy, going through the current situation of several sectors and detailing the reforms that are being promoted.

There is an approach to the telecommunications sector, namely in chapter 2, dedicated to the “Structural policies to lift Portugal’s living standards”.  In this context, focus is giving to the efforts to reduce some obstacles to effective competition via multiple instruments, such as pre-selection, portability and local loop unbundling. In fact, although telecommunication prices have declined over the last years, there are still important differences in the fixed telephony prices in Portugal, namely for international calls, as compared with the remaining OECD member countries.

On the other hand, the survey recognises the progress made in information and communication technologies (ICT) use, residential and non-residential, although not keeping up with the development in the remaining OECD countries. The policy followed by Portugal in disclosing ITC is enhanced, focusing the several initiatives recently adopted aiming at reducing the gap that, even tough, still exists in some indicators as compared to the average of the organization.
