Commission adopts Communication on standardization


The European Commission has adopted, last 18 October, a Communication on the role of European standardization to support European legislation and policies, highlighting the existing connection between standards and European competitiveness. According to the Commission, standards contribute to better governance, stimulate business competitiveness and remove barriers to trade.

The Communication renews the Commission determination in developing international standardization, highlighting the need to reinforce the role of European standardization.  Thus, the objectives and the European standardization field of application are analysed and the various existing challenges identified as well as how to overcome them so as to give more effectiveness to this activity.  In addition, the importance of the European standardization bodies is underlined: the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETS
