Galileo - recruitment and new developments


Applications are invited for the post of Executive Director of the Galileo Supervisory Authority, to be submitted no later than 3 November 2004. The Galileo Executive Director will be the Supervisory Authority's legal representative to the outside and his/her responsibilities include, among others:

- Preparation of the meetings of the Administrative Board, in which he/she will take part without having the right to vote;

- Implementation of the Supervisory Authority's annual work program;

- Definition and execution of the Supervisory Authority's budget;

- Preparation of the annual activity report;

- Establishment of the organization chart; and

- Direction of the Supervisory Authority's staff.

Also in the scope of Galileo, the European Commission adopted a communication on moving to the deployment and operational phases of the European program regarding the satellite radionavigation system (Galileo), on 6 October, stressing that the conditions have been met for launching this program. The Council shall confirm this transition, the essential features of the system and the commitment of the public authorities with regard to the funding of the deployment and operational phases and to the control of the system, particulars which are necessary in order to enable private-sector stakeholders to confirm their bids and their financial commitments and the common undertaking to complete the negotiation of the concession contract which will be signed in the course of 2005 by the Supervisory Authority.

In parallel, an important step was taken as regards the cooperation between the European Union (EU) and the countries comprised by the MEDA, which is the Community program that represents the main financial instrument of the European Union for the implementation of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, with the inauguration of the Galileo Euro-Med Cooperation Office and the launching of the MEDA GNSS project (Global Satellite Navigation System). This project was launched by the European Commission and will be managed by the Galileo Joint Undertaking.
