Reorganisation of the Information Society and Media Directorate General of the European Commission

Aiming at concentrating more areas under the same Directorate General, the new organization of the Information Society and Media Directorate General of the European Commission integrates, as from the beginning of February, three fundamental areas: electronic communication services, broadcasting and computer networks. This reorganisation of this Directorate General involved the establishment of two new Directorates and three new Units.

At the level of the renamed Audiovisual, Media and Internet Directorate, two units which were part of the Education and Culture Directorate General were integrated, and are responsible for the audiovisual and media policies. A Research Directorate has been established, with responsibilities in the area of research activities concerning public services for citizens and businesses, as well as the General Affairs Directorate, which comprises the support services necessary for internal planning and co-ordination with other European institutions. Lastly, and as regards the Component and Systems Directorate, the Unit covering ICT for Transport and Environment has also now been split into two separate units.
