Survey on the quality of the GSM mobile networks - long calls

Mobile networks have a good ability to keep long voice calls – that was the main conclusion of the study that surveyed the quality of the mobile networks (QoS-GSM) carried out by ANACOM in May 2005.

ANACOM carried out once again the evaluation of the quality of service by mobile operators in Portugal. This time it verified the ability of the mobile networks to maintain long calls (the study considered long calls those that last 5 minutes). Concerning geographic coverage, analysis was made to the road axles of Lisbon-Porto (A1), Porto-Valença-Porto (A3+IC1), Lisbon-Sintra-Cascais-Lisbon (A5+IC19) and Lisbon-Vila Real de Santo António (A2+A22).

As with previous studies, the following mobile network indicators were analyzed: coverage, accessibility and audio quality.

In terms of accessibility, more than 93% of the test calls were established and kept successfully. The results of this study compared with those of the one made on average duration calls (110 seconds) in October/ December 2004, on the same spots, show that the accessibility indicator is worse for long calls, due mainly to the increase in lost calls during the conversational phase.

The study showed proper levels of network coverage, as with other studies previously carried out on the same locations.

Concerning the perception of voice communications on the mobile networks, about 98% of test calls had good or acceptable audio quality, on average. This indicator does not show significant differences between the results of the studies on long and average length calls.
